PUB TALK: THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2003
"Sun Microsystems and the Auto-ID Center"
By Mr. Markus Weber, Systems Engineer, iForce Solution Center, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Open to the Public. The Pub Talk begins at 6:00 p.m.

Auto-ID fits perfectly in with Sun Microsystems' vision. For many years, Sun's philosophy was and still is "The Network is the Computer." With an Auto-ID infrastructure in place, the company will have an "internet of things." Already in 1999, Bill Joy, Chief Scientist at Sun Microsystems, was quoted in Forbes Magazine, "Every single object manufactured will be created with a wireless address and will carry an identifier." Sun has a long history and record in successful involvement with industry standards, and has been a sponsor of the Auto-ID Center since June 2000. In addition, through Dirk Heyman, Sun chairs the Technology Board of the Auto-ID Center and is actively involved in Auto-ID field pilots.

At this Pub Talk, come hear Mr. Markus Weber discuss Sun's initiatives at the iForce Solution Center and their support of the Auto-ID Center.

ABOUT MARKUS WEBER

Markus Weber is an Application Engineer with Sun Microsystems' iForce Solution Center. He has been working at Sun's iForce Solution Center in Menlo Park, California, for 3 1/2 years. After focusing on such different areas like supply chain management applications, online trade exchanges, and retail industry-specific applications, he has turned his attention to Auto-ID projects for the last eight months, always keeping in mind the customer-centric nature of Sun's iForce Solution Centers. Before joining Sun, Mr. Weber was a DBA for Hewlett-Packard in Grenoble, France, and a database programmer for Ascom Autelca in Berne, Switzerland.

ABOUT SUN MICROSYSTEMS'S iFORCE SOLUTION CENTER

Sun Microsystems' global network of iForce Centers (http:// www.sun.com/executives/iforce/centers/) includes three types of centers: Sun-led, partner-led, and software product-focused. This network of centers lets you invest in testing your concept before purchasing the final complete solution. iForce Centers are designed to help Sun's customers make informed investment decisions, and build and test prototype solutions before going to market.

Each center, whether led by Sun, world-class system integrators, or top caliber software vendors, represents a brain trust of knowledge, all in one location. These resources work with you to help minimize the risks and costs associated with architecting, developing, and deploying your solution. The centers provide assessments, solution demonstrations, proof-of-concepts, and sizing and tuning.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 2003
"Are We There Yet? A Look at Technology and Where We Expected to be by Now"
By Dr. Bob Glass, Futurist and Fellow, Silicon Valley World Internet Center
7:00 p.m. Open to the Public. No Fee.
Not held at the Center. Please Note Special Location.
Held at Cypress Semiconductor, 198 Champion Court, Building 6, San Jose

In collaboration with the Silicon Valley Web Guild (www.webguild.org), the World Internet Center would like to invite you to a special presentation by Dr. Bob Glass, Fellow of the Center, on Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. in San Jose (Please note special location.) The topic will be:

"Are We There Yet? A Look at Technology and Where We Expected to be by Now."

In 1992, "Dr. Bob" and his team at Sun Microsystems embarked on trying to envision the future with the hopes of trying to figure out where technology was headed. Two years later, "Starfire" - a Vision of the future was released. Starfire was a look at the world of 2004 (from the vantage point of 1992-1994) and an attempt to create a "video prototype." The team felt that by creating a short video, the user experience of a corporate customer could be better developed. At the time the film was developed and released (1992-1994), there was no common knowledge of the Internet or widespread use of email, yet these items are forecasted in the film.

Join Dr. Bob as he takes a glance at the future through the past. The film is 25 minutes in length and offers an amusing peek at where we should be by now... Are we there yet?

This special presentation will be held at Cypress Semiconductor, 198 Champion Court, Building 6, San Jose, CA 95134. There is no fee for attending. However, the favor of a reply would be most appreciated. To register in advance, please contact:

SUMMARY: CHALLENGE-THE-EXPERT: THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2003
"Solving the Complexity Challenge in the Design of Electronic Systems"
By Dr. Horst Salzwedel, Chief Technology Officer and President, MLDesign Technologies & Fellow, Silicon Valley World Internet Center
Summary and Presentation Link Below.

Last week, Center Fellow, Dr. Horst Salzwedel, responded fully to audience's challenges in the Challenge-the-Expert Program on "Solving the Complexity Challenge in the Design of Electronic Systems." Dr. Salzwedel delineated the problem that all hardware and software producers face: reducing modeling, simulation, and testing time for mission-level complex design thus shortening significantly time-to-market.

PRACTICAL MOBILITY THINK TANK SESSION PROCEEDINGS AVAILABLE
"Practical Mobility: Creating Reactive Supply Networks"
Summary and Proceedings Link Below.

In the Fall 2002, the Silicon Valley World Internet Center convened 24 senior professionals -- representing end-users, solution providers, and carriers -- for a Think Tank Session focused on what factors will bring mobile communications, in a practical manner, into supply chain management. Participants explored:

  • Enterprises' supply chain challenges and how Practical Mobility could assist
  • Barriers to adoption of Practical Mobility and facilitating factors supporting the creation of enterprise solutions
  • Future state of Mobile Supply Chain Management solutions: In other words, what will be adopted and still working five years from now?

This session was strongly supported by the Center's Knowledge Network Partner, Incucomm, Inc. (http://www.incucomm.com), an expert consultancy in the area of mobile and wireless communications.

The full proceedings, along with supporting appendices, are available on the Center's Website. To view the proceedings, visit the Center's Website. Scroll down to October 24, 2002 "Practical Mobility: Creating Reactive Supply Networks" and click onto "Proceedings" (PDF format).
