During this evening, we will have the opportunity to learn about several initiatives leveraging technology -- and especially the Internet -- for supporting education in South Africa. What better way to wrap up the year than to learn from your Valley colleagues what all these advanced technologies can do to improve individuals' lives around the world!

SUMMARY: WORLD INTERNET CENTER CEO SPEAKS AT SDFORUM'S INTERNATIONAL SIG MEETING: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004
"A MODEL FOR INTERNATIONAL INNOVATION: THE WORLD INTERNET CENTER MODEL NINE YEARS HENCE"
With Dr. Susan J. Duggan, CEO & Co-founder, Silicon Valley World Internet Center

On Monday, November 15, the Center's CEO, Dr. Susan Duggan, addressed the International Special Interest Group of the Software Development Forum about taking the model of the World Internet Center to other locations around the world. After a brief review of the nine-year history of the Center, Dr. Duggan asked the group if this style of a multi-corporate, client-funded innovation platform would succeed in other locations, such as Shanghai, Oslo, Bangalore or, for that matter, Austin, Texas. The general consensus was that there is, indeed, a need for providing a third-party location for bringing small, medium, and large-size technology producers together (often with end-users) for advancing the strategies for research, market- and product-development. Almost all agreed that the free-wheeling culture of networking in the Silicon Valley would not be easily replicated or "imposed" on other cultures. However, the formal process of presenting new ideas, providing a safe platform for the critical assessment of innovative software and hardware for investment or acquisition purposes could be very useful.

The big question of the evening was how best to harness innovative juices around the world in a virtual environment. A well-moderated on-line forum with specific technology and business foci - and very specific timelines for input - seemed to be the best solution for garnering insights from around the world. Beyond that, however, was the call for a bi-annual summit of World Internet Center "members" (as yet to be defined) who have contributed to this knowledge base throughout the year. Many in the audience supported the need for recognizing and utilizing the innovative spirit and contributions from around the world, knowing that it would enhance what the Silicon Valley has to offer.

At the end of the day, several audience members had strong opinions about the viability of certain locations: Melbourne vs. Brisbane; Munich vs. Berlin; Bangalore vs. ?? And what happened to Austin? (Many thumbs were down on Austin, TX, and up for Seattle, WA, and Reston, VA).

Any other contributions to this dialogue would be most appreciated. Please send your comments to Dr. Susan J. Duggan, CEO, Silicon Valley World Internet Center, at duggan@worldinternetcenter.com
