Email is still the killer app of the Internet: more than 300 million people use email every day, tens of millions for over two hours each day. These numbers have been increasing exponentially, with no end in sight. But what's new in email? The Internet's hottest technology: search.

Search-based email initiatives from Stata Labs and Google are resetting business and consumer expectations for the email experience. The results? Search-based email saves people time (sometimes hours per week) and also unlocks a wealth of information buried in email archives that is effectively inaccessible without search. Increased efficiency and productivity aren't the only hot new issues in email -- email security, RSS feeds, blogs, spam and privacy round out today's email headlines.

Dr. Raymie Stata, our Pub Master for the evening, is currently the CTO and Founder of Stata Labs. He was a search pioneer at Compaq, DEC, and the Internet Archive. As the co-founder and creator of Bloomba, Dr. Stata is leading the way in creating innovative new search-based email products.

At this Power Pub, join Dr. Stata to discuss the key issues and changes as email rapidly evolves:

  1. Google has gotten into the email game -- how and when will Microsoft and Yahoo respond? How do you intend to compete with Gmail?
  2. Why is search-based email so key to the desktop?
  3. Will anyone be able to compete with the desktop search developments in Longhorn -- the next version of Microsoft's operating system?

SUMMARY: EXECUTIVE BRIEFING AND LAUNCH OF NEWEST CORPORATE SPONSOR, ARCHSTONE CONSULTING: THURSDAY, MAY 13, 2004
"CAPTURING THE VALUE OF THE EXTENDED MANUFACTURING MODEL Beyond the Extended Enterprise: NBT = EEM + SOA"

By Mr. Eric Schlumpf, Principal and Global Manufacturing Practice Leader, Archstone Consulting & Corporate Sponsor, Silicon Valley World Internet Center
Summary and links below.

Last Thursday, May 13, 2004, the World Internet Center was proud to launch Archstone Consulting (http://www.archstoneconsulting.com) as its newest Corporate Sponsor. Mr. Eric Schlumpf, Principal and Global Manufacturing Practice Leader of Archstone Consulting, presented an in-depth view of how companies can best utilize their investment in IT to capture the greatest value from their manufacturing model.

Mr. Schlumpf addressed the increasing challenges to managing an extended enterprise model (EEM) and posited that service-oriented architecture (SOA) will enable management to re-gain control of the process layer. The continuing challenge is to design flexibility into the system to allow for more robust uses of data across the organization and with trading partners.

The Cypress Room at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel provided a fittingly Californian background to welcome this next-generation business consulting firm into the Valley. The audience represented a rich cross-section of the Silicon Valley's technology and business mosaic, with senior representatives from SAP, HP Labs, the Office of the CTO of Sun Microsystems, PeopleSoft, France Telecom, and many small- and medium-sized technology companies. Suffice it to say that a very good time was had by all during the outside reception on the terrace at the Cabana Hotel.

Mr. Schlumpf's electronic presentation is very in-depth regarding the key points of the Executive Briefing. The ePresentation is archived on the Center's Website. Archstone Consulting has also provided an Executive Summary from Mr. Schlumpf describing Extended Enterprise Management (EEM) to possibly be "The Next Big Thing" for companies.
