"The Promise of Cost-effective Broadband: Breakthroughs at the Fiber Internet Center"
By Mr. Bob Evans, Co-Founder, Fiber Internet Center &

Everybody wants broadband at higher speeds than today's DSL and cable modem. Although many are hooked on high speed, both businesses and consumers are thwarted by high initial costs of building out fiber infrastructures. Roughly 10% of the City of Palo Alto's dark fiber network is currently being used. A good 90% goes un-used due to the expense of the buildout. Wireless solutions have made it possible to fulfill the promise of cost-effective broadband.

At this Pub Talk, come hear as Bob Evans and Les Laky, Founders of the Fiber Internet Center, discuss this important issue of cost versus access in our local community. They will share examples of current projects that are allowing cost-effective broadband services to be deployed to both businesses and residences.

Making the connection to the Fiber Internet Center's gigabit ethernet can approach the monthly cost of a T1. The hurdle is the cost to build out the drop cable from the nearest splice point. To scale this hurdle, the Fiber Internet Center utilizes wireless technologies to extend the reach at a lower cost. Come join us for this discussion on March 6th at 6:00 p.m.

ABOUT BOB EVANS

Bob L. Evans (www.bobevans.net), Co-Founder of the Fiber Internet Center, is also the founder of MediaCity World, Palo Alto's first ISP. Mr. Evans also created a broadband bleeding edge cable modem service called ISP Channel, which became the third largest turnkey provider of cable modem service in the U.S. This broadband service availability helped to double the value of Palo Alto's Cable-Coop - as it did for over 130 cable networks. The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Internet Inventions, Mr. Evans is a true Silicon Valley entrepreneur, raconteur, and original. He has combined his technical ingenuity, entrepreneurial ability, and team building skills to found successful companies for the past 20 years.

ABOUT LES LAKY

Les Laky (www.leslaky.com), Co-Founder of the Fiber Internet Center, is a telecom and Nortel veteran, a pioneer in cable modem technology. Mr. Laky was one of the founders of MediaCity, a successfully Palo Alto ISP acquired by SoftNet in 1996. He has more than 30 years of high-tech experience - from start-ups to large multi-national corporations. Mr. Laky is a Co-Founder and General Partner of Internet Inventions, one of a new breed of start-up venture companies headquartered in Palo Alto, California. SPECIAL PRESENTATION: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 2003
"Are We There Yet? A Look at Technology and Where We Expected to be by Now"
By Dr. Bob Glass, Futurist and Fellow, Silicon Valley World Internet Center
7:00 p.m. Open to the Public. No Fee.
Not held at the Center. Please Note Special Location.
Held at Cypress Semiconductor, 198 Champion Court, Building 6, San Jose

In collaboration with the Silicon Valley Web Guild (www.webguild.org), the World Internet Center would like to invite you to a special presentation by Dr. Bob Glass, Fellow of the Center, on Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. in San Jose (Please note special location.) The topic will be:

"Are We There Yet? A Look at Technology and Where We Expected to be by Now."

In 1992, "Dr. Bob" and his team at Sun Microsystems embarked on trying to envision the future with the hopes of trying to figure out where technology was headed. Two years later, "Starfire" - a Vision of the future was released. Starfire was a look at the world of 2004 (from the vantage point of 1992-1994) and an attempt to create a "video prototype." The team felt that by creating a short video, the user experience of a corporate customer could be better developed. At the time the film was developed and released (1992-1994), there was no common knowledge of the Internet or widespread use of email, yet these items are forecasted in the film.

Join Dr. Bob as he takes a glance at the future through the past. The film is 25 minutes in length and offers an amusing peek at where we should be by now... Are we there yet?

This special presentation will be held at Cypress Semiconductor, 198 Champion Court, Building 6, San Jose, CA 95134. There is no fee for attending. However, the favor of a reply would be most appreciated. To register in advance, please contact:
