"Cable & Wireless Enables Global Efficiencies for the Pearson Group"

Cable & Wireless, an Executive Sponsor of the Center, would like to share two recent announcements with the Center's online community:

1) "How Content Delivery Services Can Boost Website Performance"

For further information (http://www.cw.com/template_05.jsp?ID=story_281002_performance).

Corporate Websites are becoming increasingly important customer 'touchpoints' as the use of the Internet and eCommerce grows, says a new online seminar featuring Gartner Research Director Mr. Rob Batchelder. Technologies such as content delivery networks are therefore crucial to an organization's effort to support its brand and manage the customer experience.

Services such as Cable & Wireless Content Delivery enable customers to store and deliver Web content from servers that are 'closer' to users. The Web pages that the user wants to view load faster - leading to faster, more reliable, and more consistent service which can impact user satisfaction and customer loyalty. This is achieved by storing copies of a customer's content on Cable & Wireless' network of servers deployed at the 'edge' of the Internet and around the world. Requests made to the customer's origin server for pages are redirected to these edge servers, meaning traffic does not have to travel over as many Internet backbones and the customer's content is served more quickly.

And, because content is stored across the Cable & Wireless network and delivered from edge servers, the load on the customer's origin servers is reduced, enabling them to better cope with surges in demand.

To register for a free seminar and white paper, visit (http://www.cw.com/template_05.jsp?ID=story_281002_performance).

2) "Cable & Wireless Enables Global Efficiencies for the Pearson Group"

For further information (http://www.cw.com/template_05.jsp?ID=story_171002_pearson).

International media group Pearson needed to rationalize its disparate web infrastructure. The company needed a single global service provider that could meet a comprehensive set of requirements across all of its business units and geographies. Cable & Wireless was one of only a few contenders that could meet these criteria. It provided a global solution which helped Pearson reduce costs, improve reliability, and set a group-wide standard.

THINK TANK SESSION: MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2002
"Continued Discontinuous Technologies on the Software Horizon"

9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Reception Follows. Invitation-only.
Limit: 20 participants.
See Below for Possible Participation.

The next wave of discontinuous technologies will shape the future of the software industry. Many of these discontinuous technologies will emanate from advances in software infrastructure. Previous breakthroughs included application servers, integration servers, and portal servers. They gave us the basis for the Internet OS. What future set of advances will give us the ability to create the next generation of the Internet?

The objective of this Think Tank Session is to focus on the future of software infrastructure and the discontinuous technologies affecting that future. This invitation-only session will convene 20 experts in the software arena for an interactive exchange of knowledge. There is no fee to attend. Proceedings will be shared only with participants. This session is being held at the request of Fujitsu, one of the Center's Executive Sponsors.

Questions to be addressed at this Think Tank Session include:

  • What advances will there be in software infrastructure in the next 2 - 3 years?
  • What discontinuous technologies will arise from these advances in 3 - 4 years?
  • Are there other sources of discontinuous technologies that will have an impact on software infrastructure?
  • What are the implications for middleware of these discontinuous technologies?
