THINK
TANK SESSION: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2002
"Business Applications and the Future of Web Services"
Invitation-only. 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Limit: 20 participants.
Web Services will undoubtedly change the way enterprises approach
business applications. The question is how? Standards created over
the last three years provide some guidance for companies, but standards
will not determine the future impact Web Services will have on the
way IT supports business processes. The needs of enterprises will
shape the development of applications.
The objective of this Think Tank Session is to focus on the needs
of enterprises, addressing why companies will change, how they will
adapt, and what they will do to maximize the potential of Web Services.
This Think Tank Session is part of a series during fall 2002 on
the strategies and future development of Web Services. SAP -- one of the Center's Executive Sponsors -- will provide introductory comments at this Session by sharing
its strategic view on why Web Services has the potential to cause
a fundamental shift in the way packaged applications are developed,
deployed, and used. The session will explore whether most application
vendors are missing the next logical step between now and the "nirvana"
that Web Services promises to deliver to enterprises.
Application vendors, partner companies, and experts will come
together to participate in this active Session, where each participant
will be challenged to share thoughts and views on the future of
Web Services in the context of business applications for the next
36 month market horizon.
WORKING DEFINITION OF WEB SERVICES
For the purpose of this Think Tank Session, the working
definition of Web Services is as follows:
Web Services are self-contained, self-describing, modular applications
serving a particular business need that can provide integration
at the process or function level using open Web Services/Internet
standards (HTTP, WSDL, XML, SOAP, UDDI, et al).
