WORKING GROUP SESSION: WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002
"Business Rules in Mapping"
Third session of a Working Group on "Dynamic Information Integration"
Invitation-only. 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.

As a result of a series of programs last fall, the Center is hosting a Working Group session during winter and spring 2002 on "Dynamic Information Integration." A group of 10-12 continuing participants will analyze and discuss various aspects of dynamic information integration over the next several months, including:

• The role and importance of explicit models
• How to achieve a working feedback loop
• Existing technologies and components
• Relevant standards

THIRD WORKING GROUP SESSION
The third Working Group session on May 7 will focus on "Business Rules in Mapping." When integrating systems and data, mapping between taxonomies often becomes necessary. However, in some cases a static mapping of objects in one taxonomy to objects in another taxonomy is not sufficient. Rather, the case is that business rules have to be applied during mapping. The following illustrates this situation. A credit check is offered as a Web Service and requires the DUNS number and credit amount as input parameters. An ERP system with its own way of numbering customers will be calling the credit check service. A mapping between the customer ID of the ERP system and the DUNS number thus becomes necessary. But this simple, static mapping may not be enough. For example, agreements may exist that a parent company takes over payment responsibilities for certain subsidiaries or different forms of bank guarantees are in place, complicating the necessary mapping.

The following questions -- among others -- will be discussed over wine and light hors d'oeuvres:

• Is there a need for a generic solution to combine data mapping with business rules? In what sort of situations is this needed?
• Do systematic approaches to this problem exist?
• How can rules be generated and maintained efficiently?

This Working Group session is invitation-only. If you have an interest in participating in this session and represent either academia or an enduser company dealing with such issues, send your name, company, bio, email, and telephone number to:

PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2002
"Revolutionizing Late Stage Clinical Trials: The 1747, Inc. Direct-to-Participant Method"
By Dr. Naomi Fried, General Manager & Vice President of Business Development, 1747, Inc.
Open to the Public. 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The Pub talk begins at 6:00 p.m.

At this Pub, come hear how 1747 has developed an online system that dramatically reduces recruitment time, clinical trial duration, and direct trial costs, which means getting drugs to market faster.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that the safety and efficacy of new drugs be demonstrated in randomized clinical trials before they can be marketed. Traditionally, a pharmaceutical company contracts with a contract research organization (CRO) to coordinate the complex process of conducting a clinical trial. The CRO recruits, identifies, and enrolls principal investigators (PIs) and clinical trial sites, which distribute the drugs, monitor their effects, and collect data from the participants. This conventional method of setting up and conducting clinical trials at physical trial centers can take years and cost millions of dollars per year. For a typical drug, every additional day it stays under patent protection can result in an additional $1-2 million of lost revenue.

ABOUT NAOMI FRIED
Naomi Fried is General Manager and Vice President for Business Development at 1747, Inc. Dr. Fried has over 12 years of experience in engineering and healthcare. During the past four years, she has assisted eHealth start-ups in fundraising, developing business strategies and strategic partnerships, and creating Web-based revenue models. Former clients have included medical content Web sites, vertical health portals, alternative health networks, and risk and disease management providers. Dr. Fried advised Stanford’s School of Medicine in the creation and spin-out of its medical informatics Internet start-up e-SKOLAR (formerly SHINE), as well as served as Interim President during its first year. Dr. Fried earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley (summa cum laude) and a Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering from MIT.

ABOUT 1747, INC.
1747, Inc. (http://www.1747.net) was founded by a team of healthcare and research professionals with many years of expertise in conducting clinical trials. e.Lilly has invested in 1747, Inc. and Eli Lilly is 1747's first customer. 1747 has developed a proprietary, patent-pending online system that will eliminate the need for intermediaries such as CROs, clinical sites, and numerous PIs to conduct Phase III and Phase IV clinical trials. 1747's Direct-to-Participant (D2P) system verifies participants' eligibility, collects their informed consent, and then enrolls them using the Internet. Participants are randomized online and study treatments are delivered directly to their homes. Data is collected directly from the participant without the need for them to physically go to a trial center. Using a virtual trial center rather than a "brick and mortar" one allows 1747, Inc. to conduct clinical trials more quickly and at significantly reduced cost. Using the 1747 method, clinical trials that would take 3 years and cost $5mm using conventional trial centers can be completed in less than a year and at a fraction of the cost. For example, a clinical trial (KALM trial) conducted using Version 1.0 of the 1747 system resulted in savings of approximately 85% in recruitment time, 65-75% in total trial duration, and nearly 80% in direct trial costs.

PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MAY 30, 2002
In observance of Memorial Day, there will be no Pub Talk on Thursday, May 30. The Pub will resume on Thursday, June 6.

INTERACTIVE PANEL DISCUSSION: TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2002
"The Future of Biotech: Managing Clinical Trials in the Internet Economy"
Registration and Networking: 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Panel: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Open to the Public. $20 fee (No fee to Center Sponsors).
Pre-registration highly recommended due to limited seating.

PROGRAM
The rapid pace of new drug development, the plethora of biotech companies in need of getting drugs to the market, and the advent of the Internet and Web are having a strong impact on the structuring and management of clinical trials -- the expensive and time-consuming process of testing medical drugs that occur in three overlapping phases which last several years each. The right strategic business decisions and compliance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) are key to the success of clinical trials, inevitably getting new drugs to the U.S. market.

At this Panel, come hear experts in the biotech industry put their stake on the ground on the following questions:

Will the processing and management of clinical trials be 'Web-ified'? If so, in what time horizon?
What mediating technology and non-technology factors are needed for clinical trials to incorporate Internet- and Web-based solutions?
What challenges are biotech companies facing in structuring and managing clinical trials? For instance, in the areas of patient acquisition and case management; data acquisition, storage, retrieval, and mining; and data analysis?
What solutions, including Internet- and Web-based ones, exist to meet these challenges?
What critical technology solutions are still needed?

Come hear about these developments during the first half of this two-hour Panel. During the second hour, audience participants will have the opportunity to engage in a lively, interactive discussion with the panelists.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS
Panelist information forthcoming.
