ABOUT WIFI METRO
WiFi Metro (http://www.wifimetro.com) is the leading wireless Internet service company in the Bay Area. The company owns a network of Wi-Fi "hot spots" and has a growing base of subscribers. WiFi Metro relies on hereUare Communications' eCoinBox™ technology and back office to manage its network and host the customer database. WiFi Metro extends computing needs beyond the office or home. With a growing network of over 35 Bay Area public Internet access points located in convenient and comfortable coffee shops, restaurants, and lounges, WiFi Metro has created a chain of "Internet Stations" where users fill up their laptops and PDAs with data slurps, send email or documents to friends or colleagues, or just surf the Internet.

WiFi Metro relies on the 802.11b wireless LAN standard to deliver connection speeds that are up to 200 times faster than regular dial up connections. With a focus on delivering public wireless Internet access to metro markets, WiFi Metro is positioned at the forefront of what Gartner/Dataquest believes to be the fastest growing segment within the IT sector.

WORKING GROUP SESSION: WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002
"Business Rules in Mapping"
Third session of a Working Group on "Dynamic Information Integration"
Invitation-only. 3:00 - 5:30 p.m.

As a result of a series of programs last fall, the Center is hosting a Working Group session during winter and spring 2002 on "Dynamic Information Integration." A group of 10-12 continuing participants will analyze and discuss various aspects of dynamic information integration over the next several months, including:

• The role and importance of explicit models
• How to achieve a working feedback loop
• Existing technologies and components
• Relevant standards

THIRD WORKING GROUP SESSION
The third Working Group session on May 7 will focus on "Business Rules in Mapping." When integrating systems and data, mapping between taxonomies often becomes necessary. However, in some cases a static mapping of objects in one taxonomy to objects in another taxonomy is not sufficient. Rather, the case is that business rules have to be applied during mapping. The following illustrates this situation. A credit check is offered as a Web Service and requires the DUNS number and credit amount as input parameters. An ERP system with its own way of numbering customers will be calling the credit check service. A mapping between the customer ID of the ERP system and the DUNS number thus becomes necessary. But this simple, static mapping may not be enough. For example, agreements may exist that a parent company takes over payment responsibilities for certain subsidiaries or different forms of bank guarantees are in place, complicating the necessary mapping.

The following questions -- among others -- will be discussed over wine and light hors d'oeuvres:

• Is there a need for a generic solution to combine data mapping with business rules? In what sort of situations is this needed?
• Do systematic approaches to this problem exist?
• How can rules be generated and maintained efficiently?

This Working Group session is invitation-only. If you have an interest in participating in this session and represent either academia or an enduser company dealing with such issues, send your name, company, bio, email, and telephone number to:

PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2002
"Don't Miss The Women! You Will Miss The Future!"
By Dr. Anita Borg, Founder & President, Institute for Women and Technology
Open to the Public. 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. The Pub talk begins at 6:00 p.m.

There are too few women creating future technology. Those who do, do not work in an environment where other women are viewed as interesting. Imagine if all the technology defining the future, and all the technology that men use were imagined and created by women. Something would be missing...half of the world's brilliance and ideas! Today, women's brilliance is missing and half of the technology that could be invented is lost. At this Pub Talk, learn how at the Institute for Women and Technology, they have collected more than 1,200 ideas from women and how they are finding ways to change systems so that women become jazzed to contribute to the development of ideas.

ABOUT ANITA BORG
Anita Borg has made a significant contribution to the technical computing industry -- from fault tolerant operating systems to cache performance tools for Internet community. In 1987, she founded Systers, which has grown to about 2,500 women in computing in 35 countries. In 1994, Dr. Borg founded the Grace Hopper Celebration, the only technical conference showcasing technical women in computing. In 1997, she founded the Institute for Women and Technology, which has been supported by Hewlett-Packard Company, Xerox, Sun, Microsoft, Compaq, and numerous individuals. At the Institute, her goal is simply to change the world by bringing technical and non-technical women together to think beyond all boxes and create outrageous new technology for a better world. For more information on Dr. Borg, visit: (http://www.iwt.org/borg.html) or (http://www.iwt.org/whoweare/bios/anitatrubio.html).

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN AND TECHNOLOGY
The Institute for Women and Technology is changing the world for women and technology. Its mission - to increase the impact of women on all aspects of technology; to increase the positive impact of technology on the lives of the world's women; and to help communities, industry, education, and government benefit from these increases - addresses technology's increasing impact on our economic, political, social, and personal lives.

The Institute for Women and Technology:
• Increases the world's understanding that women's perspective and brilliance are critical for the expansion of positive technology.
• Changes the systems, not the women. Education and workplaces need to change in ways that engage and build on women's ideas and vision.
• Increases the visibility of women's impact on technology to each other and beyond, thus increasing understanding of their own and other women's brilliance.
• Draws technical and non-technical women into technology by making the connection between technology creation and social impact.
• Provides support for women inside of technology including networking, access to relationships and information, mentoring, and problem solving.

The Institute offers four different programs. The Virtual Development Center is an industry, academic, and community partnership, and research program aimed at finding new and innovative ways to involve women and girls in all aspects of technology. The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference is the premier event for technical women in computing. The Systers Online Community for Women in Computing is the first and largest such online community engaging and supporting nearly 3,000 women in 38 countries. The Senior Women's Summit brings together an elite set of women who have become leaders in their fields, and includes representatives from academia, government, and industry.
