Globalization is one of the key levers for growing your business. For most companies, Europe is the first choice in going global, representing the largest market for software and eBusiness outside the United States. A team from McKinsey & Company and the Dortmund project, dedicated to supporting international companies in their aspirations to globalize, will give a snapshot to Europe's software and eCommerce markets as well as highlight the specific qualities of the Dortmund software cluster in Germany. For going global, **contacts** are key: get your insights on the European market and get connected to one of the major European software clusters at Thursday's Pub Talk!

ABOUT THE DORTMUND PROJECT

The Dortmund project is a public/private partnership between the City of Dortmund and major companies in Dortmund supporting the business sectors' software, micro technologies and logistics. With the assistance of McKinsey & Company, the team's efforts have led to the development of an extensive network of contacts, enabling companies, scientists, and opinion leaders to share and exchange knowledge and experience. The objective is to offer young high-tech companies, especially those in software, IT/ eCommerce, micro technologies and logistics, an excellent corporate business location.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Mr. Patrick Dufour is the Chief Information Officer of the Dortmund Project. Mr. Dufour has conducted extensive doctoral research on US clusters, especially Silicon Valley. Due to his extensive knowledge of software clusters in Europe and the United States, he is also member of the international support team for software companies.

Thomas Kneip has been with McKinsey & Company since 1998 and is currently the Engagement Manager for the Dortmund Project. In this capacity, Mr. Kneip is responsible for overseeing the team that supports the Dortmund-project and the city of Dortmund. "PRIVACY ISN'T JUST THE LAW, IT'S ALSO A GOOD IDEA!"

By Mr. David Singer, Program Director & Senior Technical Staff Member of Web Technology,
Academy of Technology, IBM Almaden Research Center
5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Open to the Public. No fee. The Pub Talk begins at 6:00 p.m.

Privacy isn't just the law, it's also a good idea. When you ask your customers or visitors for information, do you explain what you do with it? How do you make sure that the promises you make to your customers are honored? Do your visitors feel safe giving you information, or are half of your hits from "noneofyourbusiness@goaway.org"? You are not alone in asking these questions -- IBM has faced them, too. IBM's privacy policies, practices, and services have evolved over the years in response to the changing Internet environment -- Mr. Singer will talk about these changes and IBM's perspective on privacy in a Web-based world.

ABOUT DAVID SINGER

David Singer, Program Director and Senior Technical Staff Member for Web Technology, works for IBM's Internet Technology team on the use of Internet technology, particularly the Web, as a way of promoting community and communication, especially within enterprises such as IBM. He was part of the IBM team which formalized IBM's Web privacy policies. Mr. Singer is a member of the Advisory Board of the World-Wide Web Consortium. He is also co-chair of the Web and Society track for the Tenth International World-Wide Web Conference (WWW10), and was a member of the program committee of the 2000 Conference on Computers, Freedom, and Privacy. David is also one of the authors of the PICS (Platform for Internet Content Selection) Recommendation. Mr. Singer was the author of the OS/2 Gopher client, and ran IBM's first Internet Gopher and Web sites. He was also a member of the winning team at the first Internet Bowl (at Fall Internet World 1995). In the 1990s, he built and maintained IBM's gateway to Usenet. Mr. Singer joined IBM in Boca Raton, Florida, in 1976, working on the Programmable Communications Subsytem for the Series/1. He received his Bachelor's in math and Master's degree in computer science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
