***PRE-PUB TECH DEMO & PUB TALK: THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2001
"STATE OF MACHINE TRANSLATION & IBM’S WEBSPHERE TRANSLATION SERVER"

By Mr. Dennis King, Manager, Language Technologies, Tools and CTI Voice Systems, IBM Corporation

The Internet is a global medium, but will not create global communities until we break the language barrier. As the infrastructure for Internet access in Europe, Asia, and Latin America continues to grow, the number of non-English speaking Internet users will overcome the number of English speaking Internet users in short time. Yet, by some accounts, greater then 70 percent of the web sites on the Internet do not address more then one language. This is primarily because of the cost and availability of professional translation. At this Pub Talk, Dennis King, will address the use of Machine Translation, specifically, the IBM WebSphere Translation Server, to address these global needs. This will be a realistic presentation about what MT can and cannot do, and where it should be used, and where it should not be used.

A pre-Pub Tech Demo at 4 p.m. will allow those interested to get a hands-on demonstration and learn more about IBM’s WebSphere translation server.

ABOUT DENNIS KING

Dennis King is a member of the senior management team for IBM Voice Systems and has responsibility for products in the areas of language technologies, tools, and CTI. In his 20 year software engineering career with IBM, his background has been in product development in the areas of operating systems, large scale transaction processing, application development tools, Internet middleware and tools, voice, CTI and Machine Translation. Mr. King has a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics from the State University of NY at Albany and an MS in Computer Science from Polytechnic Institute of NY in Brooklyn.
