Sara K. Dean, the Center's Program Manager, will take a position as the Production Manager at San Jose Children's Musical Theater, effective February 1, 2001!

Sara came to the Center almost a year ago as its Program Assistant and, shortly thereafter, promoted to Program Manager due her excellent work on keeping the Center's programs and office running. At that time, the Center was in the process of increasing its programs and Sara never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and take on tasks that needed to be accomplished. With Sara's background is in theater production and management, the SJCMT is lucky to have her!

On behalf of the Center and its community, we will miss her friendly smile at the Thursday Pub, but hope she'll be able visit us on Thursdays. Sara, we wish you well in your new endeavor!

Two weeks ago the Center hosted a lively two-day Think Tank Session on Corporate eLearning. Forty-five participants came together to exchange knowledge and brainstorm the current status and future developments in this market for the next 12-18 months.

On the first day of this Session, the participants took part in three simultaneous breakout sessions, entitled:

* TECHNOLOGY & INFRASTRUCTURE

ABOUT MARTIE NIELSON

A business builder for over 25 years, Mr. Nielson was founder and CEO of UK-based NJS International, a mergers and acquisition company. Over 3 years, he drove the growth of client Corporate Express (Europe) from a start-up to a $450M subsidiary. In 1998 he founded Scandinavian Corporate Suppliers, with venture and debt funding, and grew it to become a very profitable, pre-IPO B2B company with $150 M in sales. As founder and CEO of The Business Superstore, Mr. Nielson built an office supply & computer superstore/telesales company with private financing, grew it to $15 million in sales and merged it with the largest chain in Europe. Prior to that Martin was a founding executive and Vice President of venture backed Businessland, Inc., a computer & networking reseller that he helped grow to $1.5 Billion and a NYSE listing. An executive with the Gap for 9 years, he helped build one of the world's premiere retailers from only a few stores to a $billion NYSE company. Martin is a graduate of San Jose State University and attended San Francisco State University's graduate school of business, with concentration on operations research.

Willy Chiu will share experiences in building the world's highest volume eBusiness websites for sporting events, eCommerce, on-line trading and on-line banking. Impact on performance from bursty web traffic patterns as well as advanced technologies for multi-tier architectures, caching and web page designs will be described. Actual website data and examples will be used, including sporting sites like the Olympics. The best practices & lessons learned were documented by IBM in a series of white papers and are made available to the industry. This presentation is aimed at business development and technical leaders who have, or who anticipate, intense user demand, whether it is Websites, such as the Olympics, Charles Schwab & Co., and Victoria's Secrets or sites that have high quality-of-service end-user expectations.

THE EXPERT

Willy Chiu is currently Vice President, High Volume Web Sites, for IBM's Software Group, and is located at the IBM Center for Java Technology, Cupertino, California. In this position, Dr. Chiu has created a focal point organization for High Volume Web Site technologies, including capabilities for customer engagements, prototyping and performance evaluation of web sites, and development of specialized tools for analyzing web site performance. Dr. Chiu has been with IBM for over 25 years, and has held many technical and management positions. He joined IBM at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center at Yorktown Heights, New York, in 1974.
